Don Bosco Relief Operations for Typhoon Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng

Don Bosco – Makati in the spirit of “pakikiramay”, charity and concern for the less fortunate, spared no time in mobilizing the Educative Pastoral Community to organize assistance to the victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. The Office of the Pastoral Affairs (Grade School and High School) in coordination with the Institutional Affairs Office spearheaded the fund and relief drive for the hapless victims whose houses were extensively devastated.
Generous students, parents, lay mission partners and other benefactors responded to the drive, committed their support and within days, donations in cash and kind were gathered.
Our school preferred to conduct the relief operation on its own without having to tie–up with those done by networks. From the surveys made, the school identified isolated communities not having been visited by any agency for charity and assistance work..jpg)
The fund relief operation was done on October 09, 2009 in the flood-stricken area of Barangay Ampid 2 Creekside San Mateo Rizal. Distributed were 150 bags of goods (canned, used clothing, sleeping materials, etc) coursed through Fr. Gerald G. Metal of San Jose De Ampid, Parish Church.
On October 12, 2009 the second relief operation was done in Pangasinan coursed through the services of Don Bosco Pampanga. Brought to the community were boxes of relief goods.
The week that followed, two more communities were visited - Lupang Arenda, Taytay, Rizal and Barangay Gulod, Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal. For these communities, relief goods were delivered to recipients, whose houses were still submerged in waist – deep water.
It would seem that for the victims, recovery would take longer than expected and life would remain miserable for quite sometime. With this in mind, the school administration, supported wholeheartedly by the entire school community, decided to forego the annual Christmas party this year and instead used the budget to extend more help to other victims. Unfortunately though, many of the school personnel – teaching and non teaching – were flood victim themselves. Somehow the heavy burden they bore from the calamity was lightened by the financial support extended by the school administration.
