THE MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Posted June 23, 2009

Last June 19, 2009, the Mass of the Holy Spirit was held at the Magone Dome. It was  concelebrated by the Salesian Fathers of our institution, Don Bosco Technical Institute -  Makati. City. Fr. Anthony Paul Bicomong, SDB, was the main celebrant. Fr. Renato de Guzman, SDB, gave the homily which served as an inspiration to the whole Educative Pastoral Community.

It was an opportune time for everyone since the celebration coincided with the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Fr. de Guzman started his homily by referring to the illustrations on the stage backdrop. He emphasized that God sent Jesus as a manifestation of His love for humanity, who was rejected by the people because of their continuous sinning, to the extent of the Lord being pierced by the lance on His side. This devotion to the Sacred Heart, according to Fr. De Guzman, started when Jesus appeared to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. Up to this time, this devotion is still being continued by the Church. Saint John Bosco, for his part, also had this devotion to the Sacred Heart. Our school adheres to this by a Eucharistic celebration every first Friday of each month.

Fr. de Guzman shared two inspiring stories for everyone. He narrated how a nine year old girl showed love and generosity to her sick mother and sibling by not eating the burger given to her, and decided to bring it home. That love is just a fraction of God’s unconditional love for us, His children.

Another story shared by Fr. De Guzman is about a man who had three sons. The man gave each one a grain of sand. Two of the sons were not able to please the old man because of their being non-productive. The old man was then led by the third son to a window, and there he was able to see the fruits of the labor of hard work. He saw a rice field teeming with life! That was what he expects and he was satisfied with what he saw.

Lastly, Fr. De Guzman related the two stories above about the seeds sown by the Holy Spirit. This is the   theme of the Holy Mass. He challenged everyone by asking, “How do you respond to God’s invitation to a FULLER LIFE, BROADER KNOWLEDGE, and DEEPER FAITH? This according to him, must be seen among us by our genuine witnessing to our Christian faith through our selfless service of others. Furthermore, he pointed out that a Bosconian helping other  Bosconians and a teacher educating the young manifest what it means to be agents of social transformation,  thus making everyone authentic members of the Don Bosco’s family.
