          FLASHBACK…

DBTI – Ballers paraded three new players, ex-pro Dennis Madrid, a natural born point-guard, former MSTC standout Jaime Valdez, big man in the middle, and fast and furious point-guard, Alex Elnar . They  joined last year’s basketball roaster headed by the sweet shooting lefty off-guard Fr. Anthony Paul Bicomong, SDB, bank shot master, Fr. Edwin “Elu” Ulanday, SDB,  one-two guard, Giovanni Varron, the deadly assassin, Jeffrey Acierto, a slasher and a streak shooting one-two guard, Benito Victoria, a steady shooter and former pro and national team player, Ralph Emerson Rivera, Mr. Everything,  Joven Datu, the running man, Garland Rivera, power forward, Hector Vergara, versatile forward, Niño Teorica, high flying showman, Luisito Apuang, big man in the middle Randy Barroga, center-forward, Ronnel Bartolome, and veteran assistant coach Allen Umali.

Determined in winning this season’s crown, Don Bosco - Men’s Basketball Team wants to prove to other teams that they mean business to grab this year’s championship.

In September, 2009, the much awaited opening games of 2009-2010 FASAAPS Men’s Basketball started with the sound of the buzzer and the ball tossed in the air. DBTI – Makati  Ballers’ first assignment was to win over last year’s 3rd place finisher, College of Saint Benilde, a team also wanting to win against our very own team. But determination and the will to win gave Don Bosco Ballers the 1st win of the tournament in a convincing way.

With the same excitement as during the last year’s championship game, Don Bosco Technical Institute-Makati (DBTI) faced the hungry Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, Trojans (LSM) 1st place finisher, and one of the toughest team in the league this season. Visiting the mighty Trojans on their home court, Don Bosco-Makati ballers kept their heads up as they faced the challenges raised by Lourdes.

On the first quarter of the second game ,  DBTI had a difficult time adjusting to their offensive plays and defensive strategy against  Lourdes School -Mandaluyong. The 2nd quarter is a different story for DBTI.  Head Coach Terrence Baclig found a solution to the problem encountered during the 1st quarter. This solution gave LSM a big problem.

Most of the shots attempted by DBTI went in. They adjusted well on defense. They  dominated the offensive and defensive rebounds too. That gave confidence to the players to pull ahead by as many as 15 points at the end of the said quarter. Reminders and tips from Coach Terrence, kept the team steady all the way to the 4th quarter. They never looked back in order to gain their 2nd win. This gave Lourdes a taste of their 1st loss this season.

After this second game, an important announcement was made by Joven Datu which surprised everyone. He announced that this would be his last game for the school. He is scheduled to leave the country to work abroad. What a big loss for the team, but on the other hand a big inspiration too for his teammates.

To get ready for the game against La Salle, Don Bosco Ballers practiced and adjustments were made by Coach Terrence on the slot left by their one key player. Ready and inspired to snatch their 3rd win in the elimination, an accident happened. Another player of DBTI got side lined.  Ronnel ‘Bart’ Bartolome, had a motorcycle accident and needed to rest his right knee. That gave Coach Terrence, a problem on big men’s rotation.

As games in the elimination went on, Don Bosco still managed to win despite their incomplete line up. As eager as his teammates, Bart started to join the practices in preparation for the game against La Salle Green Hills, the only team that beat Don Bosco last season.

The day of the game came. Bart as well as Niño failed to play against La Salle.   Don Bosco faced La Salle with an incomplete line up. Looking for revenge on last year’s loss in the hands of La Salle, DBTI started strong. Thanks to the hot hands of ex-pro Dennis Madrid, and Benito Victoria. But La Salle did not easily give up the victory to Don Bosco, who had been awaiting this much coveted win. LSGH cut the large margin to 4points at the middle of the 4th quarter that pressured DBTI.

But Don Bosco had a mission to win against La Salle. They bounced back hard to win the game giving Don Bosco-Makati the first slot seat for the finals. They enjoyed a twice to beat advantage because they swept the elimination on a high note with 9 wins - no loss record.

On the other side of the court, a do-or-die game between the 2nd seeded Lourdes School of Mandaluyong  and the 3rd seeded College of Saint Benilde  was held at  Marist School – Marikina. Eventually, LSM won to play the finals against the well rested and prepared DBTI-Makati.

THE LAST ENCOUNTER --- DBTI TEAM VS. LOURDES MANDALUYONG

December 11, 2009.  At 7:00pm, in Marist School   - Marikina, the much awaited Championship game came. Would it be a Back to Back Champion for Don Bosco-Makati or a big win for Lourdes to force a rubber match? Both teams seriously warmed up for the final game.

The buzzer sounded. Both starters in complete line up from the two teams walked to the middle of the court. The ball was tossed in the air. The game started. Each team battled to possess the ball.  Each one wanted to win the game, but only one team will survive to become the victor – that which is the toughest team in the league.

It was a seesaw battle during the 1st quarter, but DBTI wanted to prove something. They aimed for the crown. Everybody played well so that by the second quarter , a big lead was established and this was carried out all throughout the ball game.  DBTI did not give LSM a chance to grab the lead or even just to get closer. So in the end, the final buzzer sounded that indicated the game was over and obviously, DBTI – Makati Ballers are the CHAMPIONS of the FASAAPS 2009 - 2010.

For the second time in a row, Don Bosco-Makati captured the championship crown. It was  a sweet victory for Don Bosco-Ballers inspite of a tiring night.Their sacrifices, hard work and determination to win  paid off.

Let us hope they can make it again to the championship next school year .
