Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

Posted December 9, 2009

At exactly 7:10 in the morning, December 8, 2009, the students and lay mission partners from the different departments of DBTI – Makati started to assemble at the Magone Dome for a Eucharistic celebration – the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Before this special celebration, the choir rehearsed some songs for the mass. Others busied themselves in preparing the stage and the altar.  In just a matter of time, the dome was filled  with all the members of the Educative Pastoral Community.

At around 7:30 A.M., Fr. Renato De Guzman, SDB, in-charge of the Institutional Pastoral Affairs led the community in preparing for the celebration. He made known to the assembly  the theme of the celebration -  “Like Mary Immaculate, Bosconians are called to a youthful life of integrity”.

Later, Fr. De Guzman introduced the main celebrant of the mass who happens to be an alumnus of the Institution. He is Fr. John Cordero MMHC, a graduate of Don Bosco – Makati, batch 1984. He pursued his priestly vocation and though he is not a Salesian, he is now a superior of his congregation, the Marian Missionaries of the Holy Cross.

Fr. John Cordero’s homily focused on the person of Mary the Immaculate Conception. He started this by explaining the very meaning of this title of the Blessed Mother.  He said Mary was simply kept away from sin from the moment of her conception.  Fr. Cordero also highlighted 3 things that we should understand looking at the story of Mary.

First, Mary was specially chosen by God to fulfill an important and noble task. Second, with all the challenges and difficulties of her mission and for her to be the worthy bearer of the son of God, she was poured with so much grace and so she is blessed among all women. And lastly, which talks about the part of Mary in ensuring that all plans for salvation will take place, she said yes to the angel messenger with these words -  “May God’s will be done unto me”.

Fr. Cordero ended his homily with a challenge, for all of us to realize that we are all CALLED and that we are all CHOSEN to fulfill a certain mission in our life. In the same way, as we fulfill this mission, God will surely pour into us graces that we need. Like Mary, all we have to do is just to give our “great YES” for whatever is God’s plan for us. He also challenged the Bosconians not to be afraid to respond to priestly vocation by citing and sharing his own vocation story on how he discerned and realized that God is calling him in this kind of life.

It is worth noting that while the mass was on-going, many students were also lining up for confession. This shows that we Bosconians want to be kept away from sin, to always be  clean in the eyes of God, our heavenly Father.  Let Mary, the Immaculate Conception be our inspiration in keeping ourselves free from the stain of sin.
