A Red Carpet Affair

February 13, 2009, the eve of Valentine’s Day, turned out to be an unforgettable night for the juniors and seniors of Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati as they gathered in the ballroom of the Sofitel Hotel in Manila for their promenade, dubbed “A Red Carpet Affair”.

Registration for the event promptly began at 6:00 in the evening. The official start of the event was marked by a grand processional of the Bosconians and their partners in front of the Principal’s Council, a first in the history of Bosconian promenade history. It was also the first time the Principal’s Council attended the students’ promenade.

After a few words of advice from the school administration, Master John Eric Quini Quini, the night’s master of ceremonies, greeted the guests. Master Patrick Tolentino explained the night’s theme. He told the crowd to sit back and relax because that night, the student council would make sure that they would discover their inner “star”.

The student council really went all out in transforming the ballroom into the Bosconians’ own piece of Hollywood. They even set up a place where the Bosconians’ and their partners would be photographed by paparazzi, in this case, the official photographer. They literally painted the ballroom, if not the whole town, in various shades of red, to further magnify the notion of romance among the Bosconians and their partners that night.

It wasn’t before long when the Bosconians and their partners feasted upon the banquet Sofitel had prepared for them. First up was a tasty tuna salpicao in tomato bisque. Next came the main course, pork chop drizzled in apple sauce. Finally, the students enjoyed a sumptuous dessert of truffle cake.

The student council prepared a video presentation as tribute to the juniors and seniors. They presented a photo montage of their memorable moments throughout the school year set to the tune of David Cook’s “Time of My Life”. Incidentally, the song is now also slated to be used as this year’s graduation song.

The Cotillion de Honor from Assumption College wowed the crowd with their exciting dance moves. This year’s Cotillion broke tradition by dancing to modern sounds such as Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”.

Soon, the winners of the awards were announced. Michael Losbañes of fourth year mechanical technology took home the crown as the batch’s prom king. This year’s prom king was elected by the graduating batch from a set of seven candidates, one from each section. The prom prince, the prom king’s third year counterpart was also chosen this way. The other awardees, including the prom queen, the prom princess, and the male and female head turners, were chosen by the Principal’s Council. Theodore Moses Tuliao was awarded the early bird award for arriving a full three hours prior to the event proper.

The occasion took a serious tone as the most important part of the program approached. In a symbolic gesture, the student council president handed the key of responsibility to Enzo dela Paz. This signaled the juniors’ acceptance of the power and responsibility to be left behind by the seniors after graduation. To send the graduating batch off, Adrian Castro entrusted Carlo Magsino with the metaphorical guiding light. This represents the juniors’ well wishes for the graduating batch.

By 10:00 in the evening, the couples took to the dance floor. To underline the momentous occasion, the student council set up a giant clock counting down the seconds until Valentine’s Day.
