Don Bosco-Makati Bags International Recognition

The project proposal of Don Bosco-Makati's Manpower Skills and Training Center won second place in Samsung's DigitAll Hope International competition which showcases the use of technology to improve the lives of the poor, and to bridge the digital divide. The theme of the 2003 competition is "Live Your Dream" which focuses on fulfilling the dream of young people.

SY 2003- 2004 OPENS WITH A GOOD NEWS
The school year 2003 - 2004 opens with abundant blessings for DBTI Makati, aptly punctuating the school's jubilee celebration on 2004. Last May 19, 2003, the school received the good news that it's High School Department passed with flying colors the PAASCU accreditation consultancy visit. The school is thus now wholly PAASCU - accredited with both it's High School and Grade School Departments conferred with PAASCU accreditation standards.
The PAASCU affirmation is more than just a precious gift. It is the fruit of hard work, the testimony to the dedication of each and every member of the DBTI Makati family to the Salesian goal of quality education.
Ahead is an equally important task of sustaining and enhancing with greater fervor what has been earned. This is the challenge to the DBTI school community. The PAASCU scheduled a formal survey visit to the High School Department on 2004. In line with this, Father Rector, in his meeting with the Grade School and High School faculty encouraged everybody to stay focused on the school's vision of academic and technical excellence through the use of technology, towards the "school of the future". The conversion of classrooms into multi - media classrooms this school year is one step towards this vision.
DBTI Makati welcomes the school year with heightened spirit, even more ready to live up to the challenge of keeping the salesian commitment to excellence

Kudos Grade School Department Posted December
Kudos to Don Bosco Makati, Grade School Department
Friday the 13th of December, was no ordinary day. It was a day of jubilation for the grade school department. Barely 2 months after the visit of the PAASCU team to the school, the result was revealed. The grade school department was granted reaccreditation for the period of 5 years with an interim visit on the third year for the areas of Faculty and Instructional program to find out how the School of the Future is being actualized. The extraordinary support given by the Educative Pastoral Community of the School headed by Fr . Rector , Louie Castaneda; the expertise of Ms. Enore and her staff; and the efforts and dedication of the grade school heads and teachers led by its Principal - Mrs. Letty Silla, enabled the grade school to pass the 2nd resurvey visit of the PAASCU with flying colors. Special thanks is extended to the PAASCU staff for their generous assistance and guidance.
Because of everyone's hardwork and unwavering devotion to the Bosconian Spirit, Don Bosco Makati is truly keeping to its mission - vision of servant leadership and excellence through self - direction and technology with a soul. The Council of Elders And Lay Formation Posted August
The Council of Elders And Lay Formation
The Council of Elders consists of two representatives, the Servant-Leader and the Lay-Formator, from the five departments of the institution namely, the Grade School (GS), the High School (HS), the Manpower Skills Training Center (MSTC), the Non-Teaching Office Personnel (NTOP) and the Maintenance Departments. The Servant-leader assists the Lay Formator in the conduct of the spiritual formation sessions. Both attend the Council of Elders meetings and help in the formulation of topics, objectives and procedures, in the implementation, and in the evaluation of the spiritual formation programs together with the Rector.
The group was originally formed by Fr. Caesar Dizon, SDB (Rector 1996-2001) to serve as his arm in providing Salesianity formation to the members of DBTI Makati's Educative Pastoral Community (EPC). During its early implementation, Fr. Dizon, SDB acted as the leader of the group. The thrust of the Salesianity formation then was on providing the EPC members awareness about the newly formulated Salesian Philippine-North Province Vision and Mission Statement, the DBTI Makati Vision and Mission Statement and the Educative-Pastoral Plan. In the succeeding years, the leadership was transferred to the Lay Mission Partners in view of the lay-empowerment agenda of the Province. In effect, Fr. Dizon served as the adviser of the group.
The first Lay Mission Partner to hold the position of Chief Elder of the Council of Elders was Mr. Reynaldo Bolleser of the Industrial Drafting Faculty. In view of preparing him to assume the position of Chief Elder, he was sent to the Institute for Pastoral Development (IPD) in Baguio City to attend the workshop on Training the Trainers of the Laity (TRAIL). Upon his return, he conducted a re-echo workshop on the same subject to the new set of Council of Elders in preparation for the new school year. During his term, Servant-leadership was the theme of the spiritual formation. A series of spiritual formation sessions were conducted with the EPC members focusing on topics about the Characteristics of a Servant-leader.
At the end of Mr. Bolleser's term, the responsibility of being the Chief Elder was passed on to Ms. Larne Gayatgay of the Academic High School Faculty. As her preparation, she was also sent to the IPD for Steward Leaders Training. During her term, the thrust of the spiritual formation was on Prayer.
This school year (2002 - 2003) we have a new set of members of the Council of Elders. I was tasked by our new Rector, Fr. Louie Castañeda, SDB, to assume the position of Chief Elder. I was also sent to the IPD in Baguio to attend a weeklong training program entitled Growing in Christian Spirituality as part of my preparation. Our theme of this year's formation is "SA BUSKÔ, LINGKOD AKO!" which focuses on Servant-Leadership as defined in the Primer for the Vision-Mission of the Province. The objectives for this year's spiritual formation as formulated by the Council of Elders are:
- Each EPC member should fully understand the concept of servant-leadership in line with the vision and mission of DBTI Makati and
- Each EPC member should become a living model of servant-leadership.
The new set of Elders (Servant-leader and Lay Formator, respectively) are:
- Mr. Joelito Teologo and Mr. Elpidio Baguioso of the Maintenance Unit;
- Ms. Maria Concepcion Quinada and Mr. Ernesto Raymundo, Jr. of the NTOP Department;
- Mr. Teofilo Isaac, III and Ms. Rosana Salles of the GS Department;
- Mr. Peter Faithlord Doliente and Ms. Larne Gayatgay of the HS Department and
- Mr. Dante Llesol of the MSTC Department.
Fr. Louie Castañeda, SDB serves as the adviser of the group.
The first departmental formation session on Servant-leadership was held last July 22 to 26 at the Bosco Hall. During this session, the EPC members were asked to share their experiences/learning about last year's spiritual formation. Then, the theme and objectives for this year's formation were shared with them. They were also asked to write down their expectations and commitments for this year's spiritual activities. Fr. Rector gave the input on the Concept of Servant-leadership focusing on the idea that servant-leadership is leading by example. He further emphasized that helping the poor and abandoned youth should be the preferred option of the servant-leader.
Following the first formation session is a recollection to be held on August 19,2002 at the Joy Center. The recollection focuses on the topic, "The Servant-Leader In Me. Sa Buskô Lingkod Ba Ako?" At the end of the recollection, the EPC members should be able to
1. Identify the characteristics of a servant leader.
2. Discover the Servant-Leader in them.
This is a half-day activity that will conclude with a mass.
The Council of Elders will continue to meet in the coming months to plan for the impending activities for the spiritual formation of our EPC members.

DBTI Job Evaluation Process Posted July
DBTI Job Evaluation Process
"A School is as good as its personnel." The Administration committed to the attainment of its vision and mission made a decisive move to upgrade the internal efficiency and external effectivity of the school personnel of Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati through a scientific Job Evaluation Process of the functions of each existing job title in the Organizational Chart. This process is being facilitated by Core Consultant Inc. The expected outcome includes the revised organizational chart, updated job descriptions, job ranking, workable salary scheme and hopefully, a performance appraisal tool.
This task is being undertaken by the joint effort of the House Council, which is composed of Father Rector Louie Castaneda, SDB, Father Economer Arthur Hizon, SDB, Father Catechist Dante Valero, SDB, Father Catechist Ike Veloso, SDB and Bro. Elmer Rodriguez, SDB; and its lay mission partners composed of Mrs. Letty Silla, Mrs. Liz Jose and Mrs. Karen Mabilangan of the grade school department, Mr. Vic Racaza Jr., Mr. Raul Gonzaga, and Mrs. Sally de Villa of the high school department, Mr. Loret San Pedro, Mr. Neil Dichoso and Mr. Leo Medina of the MSTC; Miss Mena Enore, Miss Offie Dantes and Mr. Miguel Relente of the non-teaching personnel; Mrs. Vicky Ocampo, Mrs. Lei Gonzales and Mr. Ariel Topacio of the Administrative staff. The group had a three-day stay-in deliberation of the job functions in June 2002 at Pansol, Laguna. It is hoped that the objectives of the process would be realized and evolve into an organization of people who are servant-leaders committed to form the students into servant-leaders of the Church and society as DBTI Makati TURNS INTO GOLD in 2004.

2002 Personnel Summer Outing Posted June
2002 Personnel Summer Outing
Last June 10 , 2002 , the teaching and non teaching departments of DBTI Makati took some time out from their work and allowed themselves to enjoy one another's company at Water Camp, Kawit , Cavite. It was a day for socialization, a despedida for the outgoing Salesians and a welcome for the incoming ones.
The clear water of the camp's big pool invited everybody to make a splash.. Young and young once, teacher or not , even the Salesians took a dash into the pool. Morning was spent for swimming. Everybody was treated with a hearty and feasty lunch. A singing contest was thought of to make the afternoon alive. This was followed by short messages from the outgoing and incoming Salesians. To add more fun, those with perfect attendance and with no absent/tardiness were acknowledged and given cash.
Indeed, it was a day of recess and togetherness. Everyone was overwhelmed with the Don Bosco family spirit, making St. John Bosco's school really unique.
What is it like to be a "Salesian Educator"? Posted June
What is it like to be a "Salesian Educator"?
A "SALESIAN EDUCATOR" should possess…….
a HAND that can gently reach out even to the farthest youth and pull him back along the right path when there are signs that the youth would lose his way;
a HEART that can withstand the stress of hopelessness and can hold as much understanding as it can possibly do so when he finds his wards unbearably revolting; a heart that can silently gather enough assurance and courage to say that this too , shall pass away;
EARS that can listen to the young boy's follies as if they were a symphony, the notes of which flock into a song that would be a pleasure to hear as they keep coming back;
a VOICE that can be soft as a whisper yet firm as rock; a voice that can sip into the deep recesses of a young heart and leave an echo that will reverberate through the years;
WORDS that are sure yet kind; compelling yet assuring; sympathetic yet disarming;
EYES that can see not only the evil but also the good; not only the flesh but also the spirit; not only the clouds but also the silver lining;
HOPE that he can pin on such times when his very own world becomes discolored with intriguing dissatisfaction; But above all , a Salesian Educator must be possessed with a STERLING PERSONALITY that every youth would like to emulate because the boy sees CHRIST in him, living and moving, and the emulation becomes to the boy a rare privilege rather than a duty.
It is along this knowledge that the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Philippines come up with a stand and identity as to the nature of their educational apostolate in the Philippines following the mind and heart of its founder St. John Bosco in its call towards the formation of the young.

Jose Luis "Chito" Gascon was the newest appointee as undersecretary at the Department of Education. His appointment completed the team of Secretary Edilberto De Jesus. He serves as the Undersecretary for Legal Affairs.
He was once a government peace panel negotiator and a former student activist. He graduated from DBTI-Makati in 1981.
He was described as "stubborn and yearns to move mountains, a cause for him to have his hands full." His famous maxim: "Gold is tested by fire, just as man is tested by perseverance."
His rising to the position is a manifestation of what a Bosconian is: a servant-leader and a man of excellence.

All Systems Go for PAASCU Posted October
All Systems Go at DBTI for PAASCU Accreditation
Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati is synergizing her resources for the PAASCU accreditation. The Grade School Department was visited for the 2nd Formal Survey. The High School Department, on the other hand, is on its way for the consultancy in the areas of Instruction, Faculty, and Instructional Media Center. The accreditation is an affirmation that the school is true to her vision- mission thereby qualifying as one of the excellent schools in the country today.
It had been several months of dedicated work starting April 2002. The faculty, staff and administrators, as one family, revisited and reviewed the school's philosophy and objectives vis-a-vis the vision - mission of the school in particular and that of Don Bosco Philippine - North Province in general. Ms. Mena Enore, the Institutional Affairs Officer assisted by the various Committee Chairs facilitated the process.
The final stage of such a process is the final visit of the PAASCU accreditors last Oct. 3 - 4, 2002 for the Grade School, and December 5 or 6, 2002 for the High School.
We await the fruits of our labor with the fervent prayer that Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati's PAASCU accreditation would be re-affirmed our claim as a school of Servant- leadership and Excellence through Self-direction and Technology, with a soul. A manifestation of the school's desire to continuously render quality education and dynamic Christian formation in the Salesian spirit that promotes the spiritual, social and academic well - being of its students.

Servant-Leadership in Don Bosco Makati Posted August
Servant-Leadership in Don Bosco Makati
According to Jesus
You call me teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash on another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, and no messenger is greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (Jn 13: 13-17)
- Servant-leadership is "building people through the accomplishment of tasks," rather than "accomplishing tasks through people."
- Servant-leaders are people with humility. These are the people who are willing to share their vulnerability with their people. Doing so, they become team players.
- The servant-leader is a transformational leader. The goal of transformational leadership is to "transform" people and organization in a literal sense- to change them in mind and heart; enlarge vision, insight, and understanding; clarify purposes; make behavior congruent with beliefs, principles, or values; and bring about changes that are permanent, self-perpetuating, and momentum building.
- In the modern organization, leadership must not involve ordering people around, but respecting the contribution they can (and want to) make. This is a view of leadership called servant leadership. The usual view of what employees need under servant leadership is empowerment; that is, control over resources and the authority to make decisions. However, the process of true servant leadership is two-fold: articulating a vision for the organization and giving employees what they need to carry out the vision
Our objective is to help our students discover their own niche in the building of the Kingdom and to do it with joy and determination. It will be a matter of physically introducing them into the world of those who asked for solidarity and help. The second objective is for them to meet persons, to share their human drama. It is not just a question of gaining experience… but for them to learn to serve the poor with empathy.
We should also motivate our students to volunteer/participate in community-related movements. And in doing so, may condition them to be available for service leading to various kinds of volunteer work, opening the doors of public life to them.
Enlightening them by the principle of service and enabling them through empowerment will obtain effective results from them.

Salesian Educators in the Cyberworld Posted June
Salesian Educators in the Cyberworld
Amidst the explosive growth in information technology , the new millennium marks a tremendous change in culture and lifestyle. The cyberworld and the worldwide web have wielded considerable influence in human lives , particularly with the young. As the internet provides a constant global linkage , the world has indeed shrunk , and the cultural barriers between different societies have been overcome. Various philosophies and information have never been more accessible to the young than at these present times.
While the cybertechnology has provided the tools and the infrastructure to facilitate and enrich the learning process , it presents a real cause of concern. The cybermedia could very well be opening the floodgates that may pollute the minds of the young , and destroy their moral fabric.
The Salesian Educators thus face the ardous tasks of overcoming the destructive influence of new technology , while at the same time harnessing and using the positive aspects of this same technology to inculcate in the young the Christian values and formation.
However , no amount of obstacles and challenges could douse the spirit of the Salesian Educators. With the Preventive System of Education of St. John Bosco , the Salesian Educators shall move forward to keep burning the Bosconian educational apostolate of formative and meaningful education , and in instilling Bosconian character of servant leadership among the youth , among its graduates.
On To DBTI Jubilee Year Posted June
On To DBTI Jubilee Year
(2000 to the Present)
2004 marks the Jubilee year of DBTI Makati. The school celebrates its 50th year of existence. In line with this, all efforts are geared towards the central objectives of making DBTI the SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE by year 2004, through the use of cybertechnology as tool for enriching the young.
Towards said goal, the necessary groundwork have been laid out. Plans have been developed and progressively carried out to fulfill the requirements of the school of the future The year 2000 gave way to historical event in the Philippine Salesian - North Province. It was on that year when the vision - mission of the educational apostolate of Don Bosco in the Philippine Salesian - North Province was revisited and reformulated in a synod of Salesians and lay partners. It was institutionalized in an Educators' Congress in April of that same year.
It was on that year when the high - tech Multiple Intelligences Center was inaugurated and opened for use of school community. Initial construction of a much bigger school canteen started that year following a three - year development plan so as to respond to the needs of the number of students that the school serves.
It was also in that year when a functional , workable and well - structured Educative - Pastoral Plan (EPP) was formulated jointly by the Salesians and the lay mission partners - showing the closer communication , cooperation and partnership between them. In year 2001, the installation of aircondition in the classrooms started. Two sections from the Preparatory and Grade One levels were converted into airconditioned rooms. The rest of the other classrooms from all levels shall be followed. Moreover on the same year, to make Bosconian students , graduates and parents abreast with latest information about the institution , a committee consists of teachers and non teachers from different departments was formed to take responsibility of the school's website which was launched in November of 2001.
In connection with this , to keep the school attune with the demands of cyberage, the MIC and faculty rooms were hooked up to cyberspace enabling teachers and students to surf from the internet. Thus, additional computers were installed in the faculty rooms and MIC. Teachers were also made adept with computers thru the ongoing Computer - Training for them. Eventually, with the school's internet access, on line learning and counseling among peers, parents and teachers would no longer be far behind. On the other hand, year 2001 also paved way for the high school and grade school teachers working closely together with their new assistant principal and new set of subject are heads. State of the art equipment was also acquired such as the OHP's and computers for powerpoint presentation of lessons among others. These were effort made to enhance and sustain the strengths of the school's academic program.
2002 Opened with the historical Techno-Cultural exhibits which highlighted the Salesian Education and apostolate in the Philippine Salesian North Province. This was presented through the projects made by the students and trainees which focused on the use of modern technology. It was held at the Glorietta Mall - the center of of commerce and industry in Makati.
To sum it all, the great hopes of the good friends of St. John Bosco, of its pioneers and all those who were courageous enough to believe in the humble beginnings of a good cause , were more than fulfilled. As in the past, the institution continues to preserve the provident touch in all its undertakings. Without losing sight of its commitment to Christian formation and servant leadership, DBTI shall move forward to work in the cyber era.
50/50: Turn Into Gold Posted June
50/50: Turn Into Gold
TURN INTO GOLD
From 2001 to 2004 Don Bosco Makati will join the other Don Bosco schools and training centers in re-inventing itself according to the spirit of General Chapter 24 (Salesian and lay partnership) and according to the demands of the twenty-first century. We will remind ourselves of the task of re-inventing Don Bosco Makati with the code "50/50".
"50/50" stands for the 50th anniversary of Don Bosco in the Philippines (2001) and the 50th anniversary of Don Bosco in Makati (2004). It also recalls Don Rua's encounter with Don Bosco when the former was still a young boy by making the motion of cutting an imaginary medal in two partnership. Today Don Bosco seems to be looking forward to a similar partnership between the SDB's and the lay mission partners. They will work together to form the young into productive citizens and good Christians.
Turn into Gold. Gold is a DBTI Makati color. It is a color that calls us to look back at the past 50 years of our history both as a Province and as an institution. It is also a color that calls us to look forward into the future - what Don Bosco can be, what Don Bosco should be. It is a vision for the coming years that can only be attained by a leap in quality!
LEAP IN QUALITY
Turn into gold also refers to the goal of Don Bosco Makati to achieve a leap in quality by the year 2004. The purpose of the golden jubilee celebration in 2004 is to celebrate that success and at the same time to renew the commitment of the EPC in continuing the journey of quality improvement.
The leap in quality is expressed in our vision:
- We are a learning community that makes use of modern technology open to new paradigms and creative expressions.
- We are a powerhouse for apostolic vocations and servant-leaders in the church and in the society.
- We are an institution that prepares competent young people for technology-related courses and careers.
The road map to achieve this vision is found in the Salesian Educative-Pastoral Plan (EPP).
We began last year (2001) on the occasion of Don Bosco's golden jubilee of presence in the Philippines the work of making a spectacular leap in quality by the year 2004.

Quantum Leap for Gold - Personnel Intrams 2002
Quantum Leap for Gold
Don Bosco Technical Institute-Makati launched the opening of the 2002 Personnel Intramural dubbed as "Quantum Leap for Gold" last April 5. As envisioned by the sports coordinators led by Mr. Ric Eugenio, PE & Sports Head, the objective of this summer activity is to promote camaraderie among personnel and at the same time, enjoy the sense of competition, fun and excitement.
In the midst of the summer heat, 6 colorful teams from different departments paraded around Savio Park: Maintenance (red), Manpower Skills Training Center or MSTC (blue and white), Non-teaching Office Personnel or NTOP (light blue), Technical High School (dark blue), Academic High School (yellow-gold) and Grade School (white and aquamarine).
The scorching mid-afternoon did not in any way dismay the participants and instead, with emcees like Ms. Rhod Nebres and Mr. Rey Bolleser, intensified the mood of the participants on this festive occasion. After the parade of the participants, Fr. Arthur Hizon, SDB delivered the inspirational talk. Mr. Pete Sumagaysay led the Oath of Sportsmanship. The Grade School teachers rendered a special dance number. The crowd cheered when the coordinators of each team participated in the lighting and passing of the ceremonial Olympic torch. A surprise number that highlighted the opening ceremony was a cheer and dance number by academic area heads of the high school department to the song "Angelina." And finally, Fr. Caesar Dizon, SDB, declared the opening of the 2002 personnel intrams.
Presentation of Awards: Most Dynamic Team was awarded to Grade School. Best Muse was awarded to NTOP. Best Escort was awarded to Grade School. Best Uniform was awarded to Maintenance. Best Banner was awarded to NTOP.

The Birth of the Multiple Intelligences Center
Birth of the MI Center
September of 1999 marked the beginning of conceptualization for the transformation of the Grade School and High School libraries into a functional, high-tech, and modern learning resource center. A task force was formed by our Rector, Fr. CAESAR N. DIZON, SDB, to work on the project based on the working paper given to the team. After the tedious year-long work [series of meetings/ deliberations], the Learning Resource Center took form and it was renamed as MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES CENTER on the premise that it will focus on the development of the eight intelligences [verbal-linguistics, logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, intrapersonal, interpersonal, bodily-kinesthetic, musical and naturalist] of the students and teachers. On April5, 1999, the Multiple Intelligences Center [MI Center] Project Proposal was finalized and approved by the House Council. The proposal came into reality when the papers on location, physical layout, content and equipment of the MI Center were submitted to our Economer, Fr. Arthur Hizon, SDB. He didn't leave any stone unturned to have our dream of having the MI Center (the way we envisioned it to be) come true. Our Multiple Intelligences Center is governed by the DBTI- Makati Mission-Vision, and is operated based on the Core Values.

The MI Center provides:
A. Services that include circulation of holdings, acquire new holdings, teach library skills, computer enhancement literacy programs.
B. Holdings that include print/non-print, multimedia materials, multi-sensory instructional resources.
C. Facilities that include internet lab, discussion area, satellites which include AVR A/B, GS AVR, Bosco Hall, and Joy Center.
D. Activities that include reading, research, story-telling, cooperative learning, group dynamics, seminar workshops, presentations, viewing, and art expressions.

Pilot Implementation of Samba Server Based Networking
for the CADD Center
Networking 56 Windows 98 units inside the CADD (Computer-Aided Drafting and Design) laboratory and faculty room was achieved by using Samba running on a Linux Server.
Samba, a free protocol that provides Windows NT and LAN Manager-style file and print services to clients such as Windows 95 and Windows 98, is a cost-effective solution for a client-server type of networking because it is locally supported by Linux, a free operating system.
Similar setup will be done in the Grade School Computer Laboratory.
CADD is part of the program of the Industrial Drafting Technology, one of the technical courses offered in the high school curriculum.

NEW LEADERS
Fresh leaders will be appointed in the Registrar's and Guidance Offices. This is consistent with our core value of servant-leadership.
GM PHILIPPINES
Talks are on the way for the MTD to train technicians for GM vehicles. If the project pushes through equipment will be made available to Don Bosco
JOB EVALUATION
Mr Montenegro of Core Consultants met with the JE committee (representing all sectors of the school commuity) last Dec. 18. Another meeting is scheduled on Jan 21. Job evaluation or job analysis will examine each job on the basis of these factors: skills, responsibility, effort and working condition. The expected result of this project is the revision of job descriptions, ranking/classification system and organizational chart. Revision of the performance appraisal (in place of efficiency rating) will follow.
BUDGETING
We will go one step higher in the budgetng process. For SY 2002-2003 each department will will determine the budget for each line item.
MAXIMIZATION OF RESOURCES!!!!
Maximization of financial and human resources resources demands cost-cutting and right-sizing. We have to do the following: (a) reduce personnel in areas where there are over-staffing (but add personnel in areas that are understaffed), (b) control expenses in areas such as repair and maintenance, capital expenditures, and supplies; (c) audit equipment to check on losses and damage; (d) outsource (for example it is cheaper to give maintenance work to an agency); (e) control consumption of electricity; and (f) enforce policies governing the grant and re-payment of cash advances and loans ...and more!
TUITION FEE INCREASE
Because of the economic situation we shall propose the least increase for next SY. This is only to make possible some salary increase.
TEXT BOOKS
Salesiana will meet with the Princpals of all Don Bosco Schools of DB North to discuss the transition to books published by Salesiana.
EPP
Representatives from the parents, alumni and students will be asked to participate in the review of the EPP of each department. The Council of the EPC (composed of these representatives and the Council of the Work) will approve any revision.
VOCATION TEAM
There are 13 senior students who will participate in the vocation overnight to be held in Don Bosco San Jose (Nueva Ecija). We also have 9 junior students who are continuing to discern God's call.
CONTRIBUTION STATEMENT

MTD TO MSTC
Manpower Training Department will be known as Manpower Skills Training Center. The Manpower training is NOT the outreach of the school. It is the outreach of the Salesians. (The GS and the HS are partners in this outreach.) To highlight this fact, we are considering this change in name. Moreover, we are also studying how to transform the present MTD into a foundation. The status of a foundation makes donations tax-deductible.
ASSISTANT TO THE RECTOR
This office will be established next school year in order to take care of external relations (public relations and resource generation), planning and development (PAASCU, EPP, TQM, Rector's Thrust), and other project implementation and monitoring
OFFICER FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS (Grade School & High School)
Mrs Liz Jose is focusing her attention on building up the database of the alumni in view of 2004. At the same time, she has packaged three projects for funding: (1) Continuing education (seminars and MA studies); (2) Classroom of the future; and (3) Additional computers for the Grade School. Interested parties may contact her at.
OFFICER FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS (Manpower Training Dept.)
Scholarship grant for 125 HS undergrads of the MTD was approved and released. Biomedical Equipment Technician Program for the Ospital ng Maynila sponsored by Arci Cultura Sviluppo is ongoing. Project for the Organization Management for Medical Center Manila, Pearl Manila Hotel and Emilio Aguinaldo College is being studied. Program on Hydrocarbon Technology funded by Swiss contact will be completed by Dec. 2001.
Possible tie-up with Southeast Asian Research Center for Agriculture is being to studied. This will link us with agri-industry in the Philippines and other Asian countries and with the ASEAN Vocational Training based in Brunei, Darussalam. Partnership with Rotary Club Foundation on a 3-month Computer Competency Program.
CALENDAR
Calendars are much-sought items for Christmas. For the Golden Jubilee of Don Bosco in the Philippines the Provincial House has printed calendars of different sizes. Each month portrays an important event in the life of Don Bosco.
SCHOOL CLEANLINESS
We are seriously studying the possibility of taking the services of an agency to keep the school clean.
CLINIC
We are centralizing the clinic for the next school year. The clinic will be transferred to the present alumni office. The present alumni office will transfer to the present CAT office. The CAT office will go back to its original site which is the room adjacent to the Chapel and Bosco Hall.
JOY CENTER
The plan is to transfer the present centralized airconditioning of the MI Center HS to the Joy Center. Ordinary airconditioning units will then be installed in the MI Center.
SEMINAR ON SUPERVISION
This school year has seen new faces among subject area heads, shop heads and assistant principals. In order to assist them carry out their responsiblities, the personnel department is organizing a seminar for those in supervisory positions. 35 slots are available.
ROOFING
We have seen major projects implemented in these past years. For next school year we will focus on less expensive but needed projects. One of them is the repair of the leaking roofs.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Mr Wilmar Sangilan, the Head of School Security, is also the coordinator for emergency-preparedness of the school. He has already briefed some of the departments about emergency preparedness.

VOCATION PROMOTION
The vocation team consists of Fr. Rector, Bro. Ogi Meneses, Mr. Jonathan Hijastro, Mr. Lito Tenerife and Mr. Gilbert Arrieta. At present we have 29 candidates from the 3rd yr and 46 from the 4th yr. The numbers are good as it may indicate that we are indeed on the way to becoming a powerhouse for apostolic vocations.
A school overnight is being planned for our senior candidates for Canlubang.
SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE
In view of 2004 we are contemplating a major make-over of the school buildings. We are getting in touch with reputable architects. We are also asking the help of the School Boys (c/o Fr Eli) and the Technical Commission (c/o Bro Joe)
Why are we creating a school of the future?
• To prepare our students to enter future-oriented universities
• To make our teaching and learning effective and efficient
• To promote independent learning
• To be a learning community that makes use of modern technology.
What theories of teaching and learning are best suited to the use of technology?
• Problem-based learnng
• Project-based learning
• Constructivism
• Multiple intelligences
INDUCTION PROGRAM
This program is meant for lay collaborators on probationary status. Since working in Don Bosco is not just a matter of earning a living but of carrying out a mission, it is important for them to know what thismission is all about and their role in it. Two sessions for 26 lay partners have been scheduled on September 15 and 22.
CLASSROOM OF THE FUTURE
Mr Vic Racaza is the champion (the one who takes the lead in bringing abright idea into reality) for creating the first classroom of the future in Don Bosco Philippines. The purpose is to demonstrate how such a classroom might look like and what takes place in such a classroom.
Mr Racaza will begin by training some teachers (we can call them enablers) in the use of technology for the classroom of the future. By May 2002 we hope to have such a classroom ready for teachers/enablers practice teaching. That way this classroom of the future will be in use for SY 2002-2003.
SALESIAN COOPERATORS
The Province meeting of the Salesian Cooperators is scheduled on September 16 at our Joy Center. The Makati Chapter is sponsoring the event. The head of the chapter (called Coordinatnig Secretary) is Dra. Rotaquio. Vicky our nurse is a candidate (called observer). The Salesian Cooperators was founded by Don Bosco himself and is the third original group of the Salesian Family. Those who are interested should go to the clinic and meet Dra. Rotaquio.
SERVANT-LEADERSHIP
We have been trying for the past two years to give the Fr Pierangelo Quaranta Award to an outstanding alumni. Mrs. Macaraig, the chair of the Awards Committee has received feedbacks that many feel that the standards are too high. This year and in view of the year 2004 we shall attempt to give an award to an alumnus who has exercised servant-leadership.
FOUNDATION DAY 2001
The foundation day celebration this school year is low key. First, we need the time to finally complete our PAASCU accreditation. Second, we wish to highlight instead the Techno-cultural Fair on January. This is still part of the Province Golden Jubilee Celebration. The High School Department is the sponsoring department. Mr Racaza is the over-all chair.
We have been putting greater stress on our Alma Mater song. For our January celebration we might come up with a sort of MTV edition of our Alma Mater song.
And looking at the long term we should be preparing a VCD edition of the history of Don Bosco Makati. Don Bosco Tarlac has given us a copy of their own history in VCD format.
The marching band of Don Bosco Thailand might come to Philippines to perform this January. They have been winning first place in international competitions of marching bands. If they do come, they will probably be performing in our football field.
The objectives of the celebrations are:
• To bring about spiritual renewal
• To promote joy and optimism
• To highlight the niche of DB Makati in technical education
• To honor outstanding students
• To foster salesianity and sense of identification with DB Makati
Operational Guidelines:
• Not too many activities
• Not too many disruptions
• Low key celebration (our focus is the Province celebration)
• Compact schedule (no lulls in between)
Some highlights:
• Public honors for outstanding alumni
• Salesian Tribute Ceremony (naming of places in honor of SDBs)
• Inauguration of Salesianity Corner (MI Center)
• HS Skills Olympics for Science and Technology
• Billiards competition
• KTV Singing Contest
• Alumni Homecoming Batch 77 (Seniors will be involved)
• Video presentation of the Alma Mater song
CONTRIBUTION STATEMENT
The NTOP gathered at the Bosco Hall (October 9) to begin reporting on the status of their TQM efforts. The Registrar's Office, the MIS and the Guidance Office presented their reports. The other offices will present their in the next meeting. The Maintenance Department on the other hand will begin theirs on October 11, 2001.
PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT
CORE Consultants is being considered to help us accomplish the following:
1. Job evaluation and organizational structure
2. Ranking system and salary scale
3. Performance Appraisal
Job evaluation seeks to review the job description and clarify the scope of authority and responsibility within the organization. This may also result in re-working the organizational chart of the school. The ranking system is meant to be the promotion system of the school. In other words, promotion will not mean getting a position but climbing the ranking the system.
Performance appraisal seeks to be a means of fostering quality improvement in the school. It replaces the efficiency rating.
By-product of this effort are faculty manuals and a revised employee's handbook.
All these are part of the Rector's thrust and the PAASCU.

NEW SALESIANS
Fr. Ben Cavestany, Fr. Philip Lazatin and Bro. Oliver Meneses (shown in respective order) are the new Salesians assigned to Don Bosco Makati. Fr. Ben is the confessor of the GS and HS while Fr. Philip is forthe MTD. Both of them are also taking up Clinical Pastoral Experience at the Makati Medical Center. Bro. Ogi teaches ethics and nonformal education at the MTD. He animates the music of the GS and HS. He is also involved in the Vocation team and in the religious organizations, among others. Bro. Parolin is doing pioneering work in agro-tech at Bangkerohan in Legazpi. He maintains a research and development office in our school.
COURSEWARE AUTHORING SEMINAR
Ms Dantes, MIC Coordinator, organized a seminar on Interactive Courseware Authoring Program for 30 participants. They are area Heads and selected teachers of both Grade School, High School Departments, two from the MIS and one from the MIC. The resource person is Mrs Debbie Grafil from St Paul Pasig. The seminar will be conducted on four consecutive Saturdays (from Sept 15 to Oct. 6) This seminar is part of our effort to create the school of the future.
MARGINALIZED YOUTH
One of the challenges we have accepted is the marginalized youth. Because of this the MTD is now increasing the number of undergraduates. Mr Carmelo Camon is working for the scholarship. The HS department will collaborate in providing teachers who will prepare these undergraduates to take the PEPT. If they pass this test, they will receive from DE (Department of Education. Culture and sports have been taken away from DECS) a high school diploma. Meanwhile the Guidance Office in cooperation with the parents' committee of the PTA will establish programs for families, particularly dysfunctional families from where youth suffering from other kinds of marginalization come from.
SCHOOL BOARD
The Provincial has tasked Don Bosco Makati to experiment on a particular school structure that consists of the House Council as school board, council of the work and EPC core. The house council/school board has authority over budget and policies. The council of the work (house council and key lay partners) takes the leadership role in school operations. The EPC core (council of the work, parents, students, cooperators and alumni) monitors and revises the lines of action of the EPP. The Rector appoints the representatives from the sector of the parents, students, cooperators and alumni. They do not have to come from the student council, PTA and alumni executive board.
OFFICE FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS
In the effort to increase our resources for the development of the school, the house council has appointed Mrs Liz Jose (GS and HS) and Mr Camon (MTD) as officers for external relations. Their task is to bring in financial, material and human resources to the school through the cooperation of parents, alumni, private individuals, private organizations, government agencies and international groups and governments. Mr Camon has been doing this task for a long time already while Mrs Jose is still at the pioneering stage.
SHORT COURSES
Mr Ed Lagayan and Mr Hernan Los Baños will conceptualize the offering of short courses in the computer labs and CAD/CAM centers. These will provide additional resources for the school and at the same time meet the vision of our school as an institution preparing competent young people for technology-related careers and the challenge of becoming a center of acadmic and technical excellence.

The session given by Fr. Philip Lazatin was highly appreciated. It was suggested that the same session be given to all faculty members by departments.
FAMILY MINISTRY
The family is critical in the process of forming productive citizens and apostolic Christians. Attention must be paid to it. The Guidance Office and the Parents' Committee of the PTA are working to put together a program for families of DB Makati.
EDITORIAL BOARD
The first task is to examine instructional materials of all subject areas to fnid out whether they are consistent with our Salesian culture. Supplementary materials may be produced to replace questionable content that may be found in the books we are currently using, but the final goal is to write books to be published by Salesiana.
